A Very Spicy Episode! (A Dune Discussion) - Renegade Marquee #18
Tonight, on a spicy episode of Renegade Marquee, the spice flows as Captain Kaye and The Streamin' Demon are joined with Lord Hades and special guest Roman Arbisi to talk about Denis Villenueve's latest epic sci-fi wonder: Dune!
How’s it going, fellow renegades? THE DIRECTOR is back to bring you the last episode of Renegade Marquee for quite a while. No worries, we’ve still got a lot of content to keep you all happy for the time being, but we’re going out for a bit with a bang! Yes, we’ve got no weird, half naked Sting here, or Roblox style fighting here; we’ve got DUNE! And you’re watching the way Villenueve intended: through second hand thoughts from a buncha Dune fans!
Needless to say, we get into details of the story, so if you want to watch it, I’d say watch it on HBO Max and then come on back! For now, I’ll let the Captain take it away…
DUNE: PART I (2021)
“Full disclaimer, I am more or less a Dune virgin. I have not read the book, and I'm only really aware of David Lynch's adaptation through cultural osmosis. That being said, I'm a huge Denis Villeneuve fan, and his passion for the source material is what got me excited for the film, and I think he delivered on exactly what he promised. On the surface, this may seem like your typical ‘chosen one’ narrative, but the densely packed world building of the source material justifies the creative decision to split the book in half. Perhaps my favorite thing about this movie is just being immersed in the desert planet of Arrakis. Cinematographer Greg Fraser does some incredible work bringing these worlds to life, accompanied by one of Hans Zimmer's best scores in recent memory. This is very strong ensemble cast, led by Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, and featuring great supporting roles from Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Paul's father Duke Leto, Jason Mamoa as Paul's mentor Duncan Idaho, and several others. If you're into hard sci-fi, then this movie should be right up your alley. However, I can also understand being overwhelmed by the material. With a runtime of 156 minutes, the audience is fed a lot of information. There's a decent amount of action, but it's mostly punctuation after mountains of exposition. The only real criticism I have personally is the ending, which feels a touch anti-climactic and might sting a whole lot more if we never end up seeing a Part 2. (EDITOR’S NOTE: No need to worry, Captain! We’ve got a sequel on the horizon!!) That's all I can say without delving into spoilers, but for now I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Dune in Dolby, and I cannot wait to see it again!” - Captain Kaye
