Catwoman Getting Hunted by Diabolical Cosmic Kids-Renegade Animation #53
Tonight, on a purrfect episode of Renegade Animation, Captain Kaye and The Animation Guru look at Selina Kyle's latest animated outing, just in time for her latest LIVE-ACTION outing, Catwoman: Hunted, as well as the final season of Craig McCracken's Netflix show Kid Cosmic, and Amazon's latest adult animated superhero series The Boys Presents: Diabolical!
‘Sup, y’all, it’s THE STREAMIN’ DEMON, and while The Director takes a much-needed sabbatical, I’ll be introducing tonight’s brand new Renegade Animation! Mike and Cam will discuss the latest DC animated movie, Catwoman: Hunted. But that’s the only superhero animation piece they’ll been looking at, for there’s also two streaming series featured here: The Boys Presents: Diabolical from Amazon, and the final season of Craig McCracken’s Kid Cosmic from Netflix!
I guarantee, it’s gonna be a SUPER episode tonight. And without further ado, here’s Cap’n Kaye to take it from here!
CATWOMAN: HUNTED
“I may be grading this movie on a curve, partially because I have yet to watch Batman Ninja, but mostly because I'm an easy lay for the heist genre of anime. So when you combine that with some of my favorite Batman supporting players taking the spotlight, they just go together like peanut butter and jelly. If I were to have any complaint, it would be that this may be only a one and done, as opposed to a fully fleshed out 26-episode series, but leaving me wanting more is a damn good problem to have. The coolest thing about this movie existing at all is the continued "globabalization" of anime production, and creatively it truly blends Eastern and Western sensibilities, all the way down to the batshit (no pun intended) third act climax. The voice cast is absolutely terrific. I was impressed by Elizabeth Gillies' performance as Selina Kyle, as she nailed the balance between the character's playful nature with her more genuine care for her friends and loved ones. I also just loved her dynamic with Stephanie Beatriz's Batwoman, who was honestly just playing the caped version of Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Of course, you have VA veterans such as Steve Blum, Keith David and Zehra Fazal filling out the cast playing various villains and henchmen, while Kirby Howell-Baptiste shines as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, our main antagonist. I love these DC Elseworld stories, because they're given plenty of room to play around with established canon. And yet with this film, you could easily slip it into the main continuity and not have to ask questions like "where's Batman," or "why isn't the Justice League handling this?" And while the climax does escalate in a way that may seem a little too big for this team-up, they find a way to make it work. The other reason I may be grading this on a curve is for the direction. Shinsuke Terasawa has been in the business since the mid to late-90's, and while he's still relatively green as a director (I believe this is his feature debut), his experience in the animation department is really put to good use. I hope that Catwoman: Hunted signals the beginning of Warner Animation giving these direct to video films the resources they deserve to create the best finished projects possible. The film is available to purchase or rent now, and serves as a perfect complement to The Batman for those who are craving more Selina Kyle.”- Captain Kaye
KID COSMIC
”It took me well over a month, but I finally finished Kid Cosmic and the Global Heroes! We can have a discussion later about Netflix's shady business practices when it comes to their animated productions later, but for now, I thought this was the perfect end to a story about a boy using escapism to cope with a heavy loss. These characters have been through so much, and these last 6 episodes do such a great job paying off each of their respective arcs. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Craig McCracken has created something truly special with this series, and I look forward to whatever he's cooking next.”-Captain Kaye
THE BOYS PRESENTS: DIABOLICAL
“The Boys Presents: Diabolical: The Boys Presents: Diabolical is a really cool anthology series made up of 8 unique shorts, each one roughly 15 minutes in length. It was fun to explore the world of The Boys through different animation art styles. My top 3 favorites would be "Laser Baby's Day Out," inspired by the Golden Age of Animation (Looney Tunes, MGM, Hanna-Barbera, etc.), "Nubian vs. Nubian," an anime inspired short about a superhero couple filing for divorce, and "John and Sun-Hee," a Korean inspired body horror short. So If you liked The Boys and Invincible, or you're just into anthology series, check this out on Prime Video.” -Captain Kaye
