Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary livestream RECAP - Arcade Musings
Hello there, citizens of Midgar! I am Neoplasmic, and welcome to my video game ramblings. Yesterday, Square Enix held a short livestream centered around Final Fantasy VII’s 25th anniversary, and boy, it was a doozy! So strap in, hang tight, and let’s chat about it!
Though it only lasted around ten minutes, Square certainly unleashed a good amount of new info for us to absorb. We had updates on merchandise available through their website, as well as new content coming to their First Soldier mobile game/battle royale shooter. They also announced that FFVII Remake is coming to Steam on PC, which is certainly awesome news for PC players. Still no love for Xbox platforms, though, which seems a little odd to me. Cough up the cash for a port, Phil!
After the First Soldier shenanigans, we finally received a new trailer for the other FFVII remake, a mobile title known as Ever Crisis, which seems to combine the main FFVII plotline with Crisis Core, a Chibi-flavored art style, some badass character portraits, excellent battle sequences (replete with Remake-inspired revamped visuals), and <gasp!> alternate costumes?!??? Tifa and Aerith have never looked better! However, that’s probably gonna cost us in terms of monetization and microtransactions, but we shall see. The game will have a closed beta test sometime later this year.
One of the biggest announcements was, of course, the remaster/remake of Crisis Core, a prequel to the mainline FFVII story with Zack Fair as a playable character and some new villains, including the mysterious Genesis, portrayed by Japanese rock star GACKT in the original PSP version of the game. Revamped graphics and new voice acting by the Remake cast are featured in this updated iteration of the title, and speaking as someone who never owned a PSP, I think it’ll be fun to play through Zack’s story and learn more about him. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will launch on all platforms in winter 2022.
Finally, producer Yoshinori Kitase took to the Lifestream-inspired stage to introduce us to… (wait for it) Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the next installment in the Remake trilogy! The announcement trailer was short, very light on context and gameplay, and seemed very early. However, just hearing lines from Aerith and Tifa and seeing Cloud, Sephiroth, and Zack walking around the environments was enough to make me tear up like the FF7 fanboy I am. I’m so thrilled that we even got a teaser trailer, because I was starting to doubt it would happen so soon! I seriously cannot wait for this game, and I’m so excited for us to have the chance to experience it on PS5 next winter!
Overall, between this showcase and the Capcom event, I’d say Summer Game Fest ‘22 is ending strong! Crisis Core Reunion and FFVII Rebirth were the highlights of the show for me, and I’m so excited to see what else will be revealed about them in the coming months! Maybe something at The Game Awards? Oh, and speaking of Capcom, we also saw a reveal of Dragon’s Dogma 2 at their 10th anniversary livestream, so yesterday was packed with cool game announcements. We’ll be chatting more about this on our Arcade Summer Game Fest podcast, so keep an eye out for that next week!
Until then, let’s mosey!
