Mental Health Checkup, vol. 1
Welcome, friends, to a more experimental podcast for us here at Renegade Pop Culture. Instead of our usual Free For All discussion, we decided to chat about our personal struggles in life, particularly when it comes to our mental and emotional health during this quarantine. We know this is an unusual topic for a popular culture website, but Mike, Kristal, Jacob, Josh, and Keona wanted to let you know that you are not alone, especially if you’re dealing with dark times in your life.
Before listening to the show, please be advised that we will be talking about some traumatic issues, including deaths in the family, depression, abuse, and suicidal thoughts. If you are sensitive to these topics, you may want to skip this episode or come back to listen to it at a later date.
On a more positive note, we do tie things in to our favorite hobbies throughout the show. At the end of the episode, we recommend some of the movies, music, Youtube channels, Twitch streamers, and video games that have helped us get through these troubled times. Our hobbies are, after all, our escape from life’s tragedies, and that’s why we love them.
We also dedicate this episode to the memory of Eli Hayes, a brilliant member of the online film fan community. Eli was a fantastic writer, a gifted director, and a great person. The news that we had lost him over the past weekend was devastating to hear, and we send our sincere condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. Eli’s legacy lives on in his films and his writing, and we shall never forget him.
Finally, we hope that those who listen to this podcast realize that they’re not alone, even during the darkest of times. If you need help, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. Please remember those who love you, and reach out to a family member or friend. There are people out there who care for you, including us! Never hesitate to reach out in your time of need. While we aren’t medical professionals or experts, we are people who care, and we have experienced loss, depression and anxiety in our lives.
