Post-Halloween Leftovers Special - Renegade Animation #82
On this spooky episode of Renegade Animation, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss Housing Complex C, Daniel Spellbound Part 1, Dead End: Paranormal Park Season 2, and Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, and while Halloween may be over, we still have plenty of spooky treats to offer. Check out what we had to say about Toonami and Adult Swim’s Lovecraftian Horror miniseries Housing Complex C, the first 10 episodes of Netflix’s CGI urban fantasy series Daniel Spellbound, Season 2 of Dead End: Paranormal Park, and the latest direct-to video Scooby-Doo film, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!
Housing Complex C
The more I think about this one, the more disappointed I become. I respect what they were trying to do, and you know I am always championing more horror in animation, but the execution just wasn’t there. There isn’t much else I can add that wasn’t already said on the podcast, so I’ll let Cameron have the final word.
“Housing Complex C: despite a few fleeting moments of dread, this mini series tries and fails to create a new take on the Lovecraft horror. It all falls flat due to lackluster animation, xenophobic characters, and undercooked storytelling“ -The Animation Guru
Daniel Spellbound (Part 1)
Knowing how Netflix operates, I can’t call this a “first season” because it feels like I watched only half of a 20-episode production order. That being said, I rather enjoyed this one. While it doesn’t do quite enough to stand out among the bevy of other fantasy series for children and young adults, it does have merit where it counts. I like the Urban Fantasy New York setting, and the characters are all fairly likable. The first couple of episodes can be a bit rough, but the story picks up the pace around episodes 3 and 4. Daniel Spellbound earns a comfortable recommendation from me.
“Daniel spellbound: while not perfect, Spellbound offers an entertaining gateway into other supernatural and magic-based animated offerings for kids and families.” -The Animation Guru
Dead End: Paranormal Park (Season 2)
Literally the only thing missing was another all musical episode, but they still let Alex Brightman sing another earworm as Pugsley. Speaking of which, I was not prepared for how big of a role he was going to play in this part of the story, the details of which I’m not about to spoil here. All I’ll say for now is that if you loved Season 1, Season 2 is just as good, if not better. It’s more character-focused, and the story goes in some fascinating directions. Looking forward to the next chapter!
“Dead End S2: the second part of this delightful show expands upon the world, characters, and dynamics that makes this one of 2022’s best animated series.” -The Animation Guru
Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!
Whether you’re a long time Scooby-Doo fan, a casual viewer, or a complete newbie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo has something to offer everyone! It’s filled to the brim with some of the silliest gags, wildly expressive animation, and a rather compelling mystery for the gang to solve. It’s amazing how after 37 direct-to-video feature films, this series shows no signs of slowing down. However, as long as they maintain this consistent quality, I’ll gladly keep watching them!
“Trick or Treat Scooby doo: the newest film in the long running franchise gets another lease on life with incredibly expressive animation by Snipple Studios with laughs that are wittier than ever, and result in one of the best outings the franchise has ever had.” -The Animation Guru
