Resident Evil celebrates 25 years of fear! TMNT: Shredder's Revenge revealed! Outriders on Game Pass! Life is Strange: True Colors unveiled! - Arcade #16
Welcome back to the stage of history, and another episode of the Renegade Arcade! This is a bit of a different version of the podcast for us, as it was our very first video live stream! So you may hear us refer to comments or things that we see as the episode goes along. Anyway, this week Brock, Tyler, and Keona chat about the Square Enix event which showcased Outriders, Marvel’s Avengers, and Life is Strange: True Colors! Plus, a new arcade-style Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was announced, called Shredder’s Revenge! Finally, we discuss the 25th anniversary of Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise and where we think RE Village is going to take the series in the near future! Join us, won’t you?
Okay, so these notes are going to be comparatively short, because I don’t have much experience with the Resident Evil franchise, outside of playing RE3 Remake last year, which I thoroughly enjoyed! So rather than pretend to know my RE factoids, I’m going to simply let the audio and video versions of the podcast speak for themselves. (Note: we’ll post the video at the end of this article.)
So, let’s talk about TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, a 2D side-scrolling brawler that recalls the halcyon days of the arcade beat-’em-up! Publisher Dotemu is teaming up with the skilled dev team at Tribute Games, who bring years of indie action game experience to the project. Everything from the old-school design of the Turtles, April O’Neil, and Splinter, to the amazingly stylized in-game graphics and music brings back memories of Konami’s classic arcade games and their home ports. Turtles in Time appears to be a major touchstone here, which is awesome, considering that the game is considered one of the greatest 2D brawlers of all time! After the success of their Streets of Rage 4 game, I cannot wait to see what Dotemu brings us with this title! I know it’ll be loads of fun.
Alright, let’s talk Outriders for a minute. So the biggest news is that Square Enix released yet another new trailer for the game, detailing character abilities and classes, and of course, it does look pretty impressive. While the demo was good and a nice intro to the narrative and gameplay, I do wish that there was a bit more polish to the game overall. Still, it’s clear that Outriders is striving to be more of an action-RPG than a full-blown live service game, and that is commendable. Speaking of which, the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate at no additional cost. Sad news for PlayStation gamers, but great news for those of us who enjoy Xbox and PC gaming. No preorder DLC armor, though, which is a minor loss, but still a shame. I sincerely hope that any of you who preordered the game on Microsoft’s platforms are able to get a refund!
Next up is something of a surprise, as Square Enix revealed the actual title of the game formerly known as Project Athia, as well as its new star! Actress Ella Balinska was on hand to introduce the newly rechristened Forspoken, a game set in a breathtaking fantasy world full of dragons and mystery! The new trailer showed just enough to give us a sense of the game world and the character that Balinska is playing. It’s certainly an impressive visual feast, but time will tell if the game lives up to the hype. We shall see.
Finally, I’m going to mention the latest game in the Life is Strange franchise, entitled True Colors, in which you play as a female Asian-American lead who sets out on a quest to discover the truth behind her brother’s death in a small town full of suspicious and intriguing characters. Alex Chen, our new lead, has the ability to perceive a person’s aura, thus allowing her to interpret their current emotional state. While that may not seem as impactful as Max’s time travel mechanic, I’m sure the developers at Deck9 have some interesting challenges in mind for Alex. True Colors certainly looks like the smoothest-running and most graphically impressive of all the Life is Strange titles, and I already like Alex quite a bit. Also cool is the fact that the Ultimate Edition of LiS: TC will come with a remastered version of the first game. Oh, and True Colors is not an episodic game, which is a good move, I think. We’ll see how it all turns out when the game launches on September 10th.
As a final note, here is the uncut live video stream, in case anyone is interested in viewing it! Tyler actually wore Lady Dimitrescu’s hat, which was very cool. Resident Evil: Village is certainly poised to make a huge impact on the gaming landscape, which is fitting for the 25th anniversary year of the landmark survival horror franchise!
Hope you enjoyed our very first video stream and the audio podcast version, as well! Let us know how we’re doing in the comments below! Until next time, be safe out there, Renegades!
