The State of Adult Animation in 2022 (Featuring Inside Job Part 2 and Little Demon) - Renegade Animation #85
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru reflect on the state of Adult Animation, while putting the spotlight on Little Demon and Inside Job Part 2.
What’s going, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, and I hope you all are enjoying the holiday season so far! This episode of the podcast is the second annual reflection on the current state of Adult Animation. On the whole, I’d say it’s been a pretty great year in terms of the movies and series that were released, while the future of the industry is now in question due to major shakeups at companies like Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. Tune in to the episode to hear our full thoughts, including the two featured series.
Little Demon
I was late to the party on this one, but I’m glad I finally watched it. The natural chemistry between Danny DeVito and his real life daughter Lucy is one of the show’s biggest highlights, on top of a great supporting cast and some wildly creative animation. On the surface, it still retains some common adult animated trademarks (violence, cursing, sexual innuendos, etc.), but deep down it’s a funny and heartwarming coming of age sitcom that happens to lean into the occult.
“Little Demon: Consider this one of 2022’s biggest surprises. It steers clear of most adult animation trappings to tell a compelling story about a young girl going through a coming of age story of dealing with her parents divorce and new devlish-tinged life that actually focuses on character growth. Easily a highlight of this years TV animation.“ -The Animation Guru
Inside Job Part 2
Inside Job Part 2 is everything I loved about Part 1, and then some! The jokes are funnier, the world building goes deeper, and everyone in the main ensemble undergoes some major character development. Reagan in particular has one of the best arcs of the season, and for a while has a real shot at happiness, until that is sadly no longer an option. I look forward to hopefully seeing more from this series in the future.
“Inside Job: while the first part takes its time to get to what the show is all about, part 2 offers a compelling tragic dramedy that is able to combine some of this years biggest laughs, and some of this years most heartwarming and heartbreaking story beats. Shion Takeuchi and Alex Hirsh have crafted what is quite possibly Netflix’s best adult animated show.“ -The Animation Guru
