These Feels... Are Not... TransPERPABLE! - Tooned Up #13
The latest episode of Tooned Up is now here! Cam the Animation Guru is joined by our Captain, Mike, and extra special guest host, Cat! They give us the rundown of all the animation news that’s fit to print (or chat about), plus a review of Netflix’s Fearless, which maybe should have left well enough alone and been afraid. Heh. Finally, our terrific trio turn their gaze upon HBO Max’s animated series, Infinity Train! Let me guess, is it about Thanos’ latest sweet ride, which he somehow took over after losing the Thanos ‘Copter? No? Drat! Anyway, we’ll read some notes about it from Mike here, and you can hear everyone’s thoughts on the podcast! Enjoy!
Oh, hey, a new Batman animated movie is coming out in 2021, and it’s called Batman: Soul of the Dragon! And it’s produced by Bruce Timm, the shepherd of the DC Animated Universe which began with Batman: The Animated Series and ran all the way through Justice League Unlimited and beyond. It’s also interesting to note that Bronze Tiger, Richard Dragon, and Lady Shiva are in the mix. Should be a cool martial arts action piece!
Now, Mike, take it away with your review of Fe@leSS!
“When it comes to animation, Netflix actually has a pretty solid track record. I may not have seen everything, but of all the films I have seen since at least 2015’s The Little Prince, I’ve sung the praises of a lot of their original animated films. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing about Fe@rleSS, written and directed by Corey Edwards.... Once in a while the dialogue gets a laugh, but only because the plot is so absurd, yet almost entirely unoriginal. Of all the actors to steal the show, it’s Gabrielle Union as the voice of General Blazerhatch, who is cartoonishly self-aware of her role in this alien invasion narrative. But guys, this movie is bad, at least bad by 2020 standards. It almost feels like two separate story ideas haphazardly tied together by a shoe string.”
Oof. ‘Nuff said. Hopefully Infinity Train turned out better.
On IT Book One:
“I just finished watching Book 1 of Infinity Train for the first time. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get on board the hype train (pun intended???), but this show really is that good! It’s an anthology series in which our main characters embark on numerous grand adventures, but the internal struggle is much deeper and personal than you might expect. These characters are extremely likeable from the moment you meet them, my favorite being the spherical robot known as One-One. I can’t wait to check out the rest of this series!”
Book Two is up next:
“Finished Book 2 of Infinity Train! Didn’t think it was possible to top the first season, and yet I was proven wrong. I really enjoyed the direction they took with this story, as the focus turns to MT, the mirror version of Tulip, and her quest to find her own identity. This season felt like the stakes were higher, like there was more to lose for our main characters. Something else I noticed was how each book so far has introduced the cast of the next story, and I look forward to seeing where that thread takes me.”
Finally, here are some thoughts on Book Three:
“The only problem I have with Infinity Train Book 3 is the staggered release of the episodes. On the one hand, I’m not opposed to a weekly schedule for streaming service originals, but between the short episode lengths and the precedent of previous HBO Max animated series debuting their respective seasons in their entirety, I really don’t understand why we couldn’t have gotten Book 3 all at once. That being said, it’s easily the best one so far, a dark as hell direction for what is still a show aimed at children, led by the most morally complex main characters out of any of the passengers.”
Well, that’s all she wrote and drew for this one, Renegades! More Tooned Up is on the way, along with our DC Fandome recap show, and our upcoming X-Men X-travaganza! Don’t miss it! And a special thanks to Kawaii Kyle, best podcast editor ever! Be safe, wear a mask, wash your hands, and take care of each other until we meet again!
