We Ramble About Adult Swim and Smiling Friends - Renegade Animation #150
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru share their thoughts on the first two seasons of Smiling Friends, within the larger context of the current state of Adult Swim.
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my co-host, the Animation Guru! It didn’t even occur to me until this writing that we just recorded our 150th episode of Renegade Animation! So naturally, we spent our time having the most nonchalant conversation about adult animation, specifically the programming block that has (if we’re being honest) overshadowed the rest of Cartoon Network. What do we mean by that? You’ll have to tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Smiling Friends
Here’s the problem with “reviewing” a comedy: you run the risk of ruining all the best jokes. Fortunately, what makes Smiling Friends so great is its endless rewatchability, among other things. I’ve seen a select few episode from Season multiple times, and they never get old. If you grew up during the peak of early to mid-2000’s internet humor, spearheaded by the likes of Newgrounds and eBaumsworld, then you are the exact target demographic!
“Adult Swim’s newest hit show offers a chaotic and bountifully creative world of laughter and vibrant visuals not seen in most animated series. It stumbles a bit here and there but there is a reason it’s a popular show.” -The Animation Guru
