Demon Slayer Special - Renegade Animation #22
It’s time to slay some demons with Cameron, Mike, and special guest host Manning! Welcome to episode 22 of Renegade Animation, where we dissect and discuss the extremely popular anime, Demon Slayer, as well as its first cinematic iteration, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train. After shattering box office records in Japan and having a great run in American cinemas, the Demon Slayer movie (and series, too) is an anime juggernaut, and we have the final word on the project right here! Smash that play button!
Without further ado, here is an excerpt of Mike’s review of the movie, taken from Letterboxd:
“The film picks up right where the first season of the anime left off, as Tanjirō Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu Agatsuma, board the Infinity Train on a new mission with the Fire Hashira, Kyōjurō Rengoku, to defeat a demon who has been tormenting the people and killing the demon slayers who oppose it! [...] I can say with confidence that this is easily one of the best Shonen anime I’ve seen in the past decade, which had me hooked by an amazing pilot. On the one hand, I wouldn’t recommend going into the film blind without having watched the anime first. Not because the plot is confusing or anything, it’s just that the emotional beats resonate more after living with these characters for 26 episodes. That being said, even if you were to experience this on its own, the movie is a feast for the eyes! While not always perfect, Demon Slayer has always been better than most anime when it comes to blending 2D and 3D animation. It’s noticeable, but never distracting, and only really used when absolutely necessary. The action has always been a highlight in the series, but in the film they really push the envelope during the climax. There isn’t too much I have to complain about, except for maybe a few minor nitpicks with the dub. But on the whole, I was blown away!”
Oh, and for those who may wonder if some of the characters in Demon Slayer improve over time…
