Dan Da Dan
If you’ve read the manga, then you already knew this was going to be most people’s favorite anime of the season, if not the entire year. If you haven’t, but are fans of what Science Saru has been putting out lately, then you are guaranteed to have a blast with this part romcom, part science fantasy mashup of aliens and the occult.
Ranma 1/2
I’m honestly impressed with how well this reboot turned out. For better or for worse, Mappa didn’t need to do much to the source material except give it a fresh coat of paint. Everything you love about the manga, from its sharp as a tack dialogue, to the absurd slapstick comedy, and even well choreographed action sequences, can all be found in Ranma 1/2! If you liked the Urusei Yatsura reboot from a few years ago, then definitely give this one a watch.
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.
I don’t think I was quite prepared for how many magical girl anime we would be getting this season, but this was a pleasant surprise. The best part is that each one is putting a different spin on the genre, while wearing its influences proudly on its sleeves. In this case, Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. takes the concept and mixes it with a workplace procedural, and the results are pretty damn excellent. I love this premise, I love the characters, but most of all, I love the recurring theme of feeling confident in your strengths and abilities. Of the two shows streaming on Prime Video, this one is easily the winner.
Demon Lord 2099
One of the problems I often have with isekai over the last decade or so is how repetitive they can from a narrative perspective. That isn’t the case with Demon Lord 2099, a cyberpunk reverse isekai set in the distant future where magic and technology are one in the same. As far as the dub is concerned, I believe Ian Sinclair completely understood the assignment voicing the titular Demon Lord Veltol. He has all of the gravitas of an immortal, yet all the comic timing of a classic fish out of water. If you’re looking for something a little more out of the box, this might hit the spot.
Negative Positive Angler
TW: depiction of a suicide attempt in the first episode.
Anime can be about anything, so why not try one all about the joys of fly fishing? Well, more specifically, Negative Positive Angler is about a down on his luck university student who forms a friendship with a group of people who are passionate about fishing. It’s through this friendship that our protagonist learns to appreciate life, and that it’s okay to ask for help. As one of the few original anime of the season, I feel compelled to recommend this, especially to those who may need a show like it.
