The Day Totto-Chan Blew Up Jellystone - Renegade Animation #176
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss the latter half of Jellystone Season 3, Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window, and The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! This was a fun episode to record, one that came with a lot of fiery passion for the classic cartoons that Cameron and I grew up with on Cartoon Network. As I’m writing this, I’m getting ready to see The Day the Earth Blew Up for a second time, and if you care about the future of the Looney Tunes on the big screen, I suggest you do the same. Without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Jellystone: Season 3B
I genuinely hope that this isn’t the last time we get to talk about this series, because I had such a great time watching this batch of episodes! On the podcast, we wanted to focus on the crossover episode, Crisis on Infinite Mirths. While I personally would have loved to see that as a full 1-hour special, what we ended up with was still a fun experience, especially seeing the different pairings of classic Hanna-Barbera characters with the Cartoon Cartoons.
“While the crossover episode could have been more creative, this was still a wonderful batch of funny episodes of the characters of HB being completely bonkers.“ -The Animation Guru
Totto-Chan: The Little Girl in the Window
Let’s take a break from the wacky Saturday Morning Cartoons to shine the spotlight on one last title from this year’s New York International Children’s Film Festival, shall we? Bring your tissues, cause this film based on the autobiographical novel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi will pull at your heartstrings. It is every bit as joyful and optimistic as any story can be from a child’s point of view, but the reality of World War II slowly starts to creep in, affecting the world around our central protagonist.
“Totto-Chan: The Little Girl in the Window is a wonderful, powerful, and human story of ingenuity and kindness during times of war.“ -The Animation Guru
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie
I still cannot believe that in the 95 years since this series began, we have never had an original theatrically released Looney Tunes movie that wasn’t either a repackaging of classic shorts with new wraparound animation, or a live action hybrid a la Space Jam or Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Now that we finally have one, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it is incredible. The Day the Earth Blew Up is filled to the brim with hilarious slapstick gags, witty dialogue, and surprisingly compelling character development that culminates in an amazing climax. This send up of sci-fi B movies inspired by the Bob Clampett era of Looney Tunes is everything I could have wanted!
“There is no contest, The Day the Earth Blew Up is the best Looney Tunes movie. A nonstop roller coaster of laughs, gags, and silly cartoony shenanigans. Please go see it in theaters.“ -The Animation Guru
