In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru shine the indie spotlight on Kiana Khansmith's animatic pilot, Pretty Pretty Please I Don't Want to Be a Magical Girl, Invincible Season 3, and Pixar's Win or Lose!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! This is another episode I’m quite proud of, with our main topics being two rock solid seasons of television, and an indie pilot that has made a huge impact in the animation community. Without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want to Be a Magical Girl
I know we’re late to the party, but hey, better late than never! Premiering on YouTube on February 28th, and amassing over 3.1 million views, Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want to Be a Magical Girl is a near perfect proof of concept for a fun deconstruction of magical girl anime tropes. It took me less than a minute to fall in love with these characters, the expressive art style, and the potential story opportunities, should this become a proper series in the future.
“I Don’t Want to Be a Magical Girl is an indie pilot that checks all the boxes for a great pilot. It has an interesting premise, lovable characters, a distinct visual look, it’s funny, and it’s just an animatic.“ -The Animation Guru
Invincible Season 3
“We can be the good guys, or we can be the guys who save the world. We can’t be both.” I’d like to think that Cameron and I were being as fair as possible in our assessment of this season. I love this show to bits, and I was very much enjoying watching this season from start to finish. However, even I can admit that it had to juggle a lot of different storylines, some gelling better than others. One thing that remains consistent, despite dips in quality of the animation due to Amazon/MGM studios slashing the budget, is the character drama. Even in this hyper violent world or superheroes, these characters feel real in a way that grounds the story emotionally.
“While it can be overstuffed with plots that they could have used for future seasons, it still brings plenty of action and internal struggle as Invincible tries to balance his personal life with the responsibility of being a superhero.“ -The Animation Guru
Win or Lose
We address the elephant in the room quite a bit on the podcast itself, so I’ll just reiterate in this blurb that the executives at Disney are a bunch of cowards for bending the knee to conservatives the way that they did. Having said that, I still think Win or Lose was a very enjoyable experience. Created by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, this 8 episode limited series was inspired by the different interpretations these two had of the same events during the production of Toy Story 4. Each episode is centered around a single character, and stylized to fit their personality and perspectives on the week leading up to the championship game.
“While it doesn't hit its full potential, and Disney's meddling soured the experience, it still results in an interesting experiment with Pixar tackling their first limited series about a little league softball game seen from different perspectives.“ -The Animation Guru
