Let's Gush About A Goofy Movie - Renegade Animation #180
In this special episode of Renegade Animation, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru celebrate the 30th anniversary of Disney's cult classic, A Goofy Movie, and the accompanying documentary, Not Just a Goof!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! Happy 30th anniversary to a movie that was a cornerstone for many millennials, ourselves included! Without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion of A Goofy Movie!
A Goofy Movie
I brought this up on the podcast, but my appreciation for A Goofy Movie has increased significantly as an adult, probably even more so than when I was younger. For a project that was consider “B material” compared to many of the Disney Renaissance titles, this movie holds up extremely well. The story of a father trying to connect with his teenage son is one that everyone can relate to, the animation is gorgeous, and the songs by the fictional pop star Powerline are genuine bangers.
“A Goofy Movie is a true underdog Disney release from the 90s that escaped the fan/cult-favorite label of other Disney animated features that didn't have an originally healthy release by becoming a retroactive Disney classic. A wonderful contemporary story of a father trying to fix the disconnect between him and his son through an outrageous road trip.“ -The Animation Guru
Not Just a Goof
One of my favorite things about Disney+ is that it’s become a home for some incredible behind the scenes documentaries, like this one. Not Just a Goof was written and directed by Eric Kimelton and Christopher Ninness, with fantastic animated sequences by Venturia Animation Studios. Don Hahn is an executive producer, and if you’ve seen his work on other docs like Waking Sleeping Beauty and Howard, then you know you’re in for something special. Cameron and I would have recorded this podcast with or without the documentary, but this provided so much rich insight not only on how the movie came together, but the lasting impact it left on the audience over the course of 30 years.
“Not Just a Goof showcases the behind-the-scenes journey of the production of one of Disney's most beloved fan favorite 90s films that shined a complicated light on folks like Katzenberg, and the troubling process of getting this film made and the decades-long fanbase it as gathered.“ -The Animation Guru
