From Gamers Magazine Interview with Andrew Smith! - Arcade Special
Hello, and welcome to another special installment of the Renegade Arcade! Today, we hear from Andrew Smith, founder of gaming website Guidefall, and the creative force behind From Gamers Magazine, a new print publication currently being crowdfunded through Kickstarter! He’s almost reached his goal, so let’s help him get there! Enjoy the interview!
As many of you know, video game magazines played a significant role in my enjoyment of this hobby, particularly during my formative years. Though many of my favorites are long defunct, I still love flipping through an old issue once in a while. Discovering PDFs of old magazines online is another way to fire up the old nostalgia engine, especially when so many of them are readily available. I know it seems strange to want to read old news and reviews, especially in the midst of the ubiquity and timeliness of online coverage. There really isn’t much of a *need* for print media to exist anymore, considering the shipping costs and the inherent delay in editorial coverage.
Still, there’s something amazing about holding a printed book or magazine in your hands, especially when it’s a high-quality publication, and that’s what Smith is aiming for with From Gamers Magazine. Each issue includes in-depth features from a diverse selection of writers, along with previews and reviews of current titles, and the art direction will utilize talented designers and creators who deserve to have their work spotlighted in the industry.
In addition, the Kickstarter campaign still has nine days left to go at the time of this writing, so please do what you can to support Andrew and his team! He has such passion for the industry at large, as well as old school magazines like EGM, Nintendo Power, and Gamepro. As we spoke, I could tell Andrew has a similar respect for the work that so many writers, editors, and designers have done in the past, and From Gamers Magazine was definitely born as a way to pay homage to the history of the games industry itself, and the amazing contributions of those who worked in print media before the internet was a twinkle in the eye of the universe.
