What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, The Animation Guru! Because this episode was recorded the day after the 97th Academy Awards, I think it’s safe to say that 2024 is officially behind us. We used this opportunity to hand out some of our own awards, in addition to reviews for two worthy titles. Without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning
It’s honestly been a while since I’ve been this excited for a new Gundam series. Between this and The Witch From Mercury, it feels like this franchise has entered some sort of Renaissance. The creative team behind this is pretty insane, and you can tell how much they adore the original series Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979, as they do near perfect recreation of that art style in the first 30 minutes of this “movie.” That’s really my only issue, it doesn’t really stand on its own as a feature film. But if you’re a Gundam fan and want to experience this on the big screen, who am I to stop you?
“While it doesn’t really work as a movie, it’s still effective as a sneak peek as to what we can expect from this new series collaboration between Sunrise and Studio Khara.“ -The Animation Guru
The Sloth Lane (A Sloth Story)
I went into this movie with no real expectations, and came out pleasantly surprised! The Sloth Lane, released in the US as A Sloth Story, is the fifth entry in the Tales From Sanctuary City franchise from Australian based company Like a Photon Creative. It’s a charming little film about a family of sloths moving to the big city and trying to grow their food truck business. The animation is delightful, these characters are all likable, and it has a positive message about family and remembering what is most important in life.
“It could have been funnier in some ways in the comedy department, but what we get is still a charming animated experience with a likable cast and the charm of an early Disney Afternoon-style show.“ -The Animation Guru
