Gurren Lagann ep. 26, "Let's Go, Buddy" Review - Fresh Takes #25
As we head into the penultimate episode of Gurren Lagann, Brock and Mike bring us another installment of Fresh Takes, in which they discuss and review the themes of the show! Things get weird as Simon, Lordgenome, Viral, Yoko, and the rest of Team Dai-Gurren search for Nia! Only the leader of the Anti-Spiral forces stands in their way! Will they get to Nia in time to save her life? Let’s find out!
So… Wow. I did not expect this. I didn’t expect a weird, altered mindscape trek through space-time. I did not expect a godlike enemy who can control probability and reality itself (paging Wanda Maximoff!). I did not expect the return of (well, he’s in the header image, so we can mention him by name) Kamina, of all people! I did not expect adult Simon to be taller than him, haha! And I did not expect Lordgenome to be a key figure in all of this.
Yet, it fits. It all fits. Everyone has their part to play, and has done so from the beginning. Yoko, Nia, Kitan, Kamina, even Boota, who actually evolves into a humanoid form because he’s stored so much Spiral energy!
Look, I’m a newbie to most anime series. I know some of the older stuff, like Robotech and Gundam Wing and some DBZ. Sometimes the metaphysical stuff they do in these shows flies right over my head. But the beautiful thing about this show is how it’s couched in something very human and emotional: the desire to save your loved ones and to cultivate your relationships and emotional maturity. There’s something incredibly moving about this episode in particular, and the way it portrays friends, lovers, would-be partners, and even former archenemies coming together to achieve a common goal. It’s a positive message, and the world needs more of that now than it ever has before.
Next time, our anime duo will be back with the series finale of Gurren Lagann. A classic series for the ages, friends. Please like this, share the link with your friends, and leave a comment below and let us know how we’re doing! ‘Til next time, Renegades!
