[lock-on] Volume 1 Kickstarter Campaign Interview with Creators Jon Doyle and Jason Maddison - A Renegade Arcade Special
In this special edition of the Renegade Arcade, we speak with two of the creators of [lock-on] Volume 1, a Kickstarter-funded video game journal produced and launched by an indie publishing start-up known as Lost in Cult! Join us as we chat with Jon Doyle and Jason Maddison, the Director and Creative Director of the journal, about their influences, favorite games and consoles, the genesis of the [lock-on] project, and the progress of their Kickstarter so far!
[lock-on] Volume 1 is designed to be the first in a long line of projects celebrating video games, art, and popular culture, with the first volume centered on the past, present, and future of Sony’s PlayStation line of consoles, as well as unique, thought-provoking features focusing on the wider culture surrounding gaming, including current topics of interest, such as the issue of player accessibility in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2. In addition, the team will focus on profiles of such developers as Housemarque, the studio behind Resogun, Nex Machina, and the upcoming Returnal, which looks set to be a high watermark in the PS5’s early lifecycle. There will also be franchise retrospectives, like the feature on Demon’s Souls, and a special article detailing one of [lock-on]’s writers and his interactions with the Nintendo PlayStation. That’s right; Nintendo was originally going to partner with Sony and release a disc-based console known as the PlayStation, before Sony actually designed their own machine.
Along with their fellow contributors and staff, Jon and Jason clearly have a passion for the gaming industry, which has led to their support of game preservation. Indeed, at the heart of [lock-on] is a desire to immortalize and preserve aspects of gaming culture and history that seem to be lost in the shuffle of the internet and SEO-focused websites. In my conversation with them, I’ve learned a lot about the issues facing the industry with regard to the preservation of games, especially those titles which are more rare and hard to find, and the consoles themselves. It’s such an in-depth topic that I’m certain we’ll cover it more in a future episode of the podcast!
On a personal note, I’m so happy with how the conversation with Jon and Jason turned out! This was one of the most fun and personal discussions about games I’ve ever had, and I really enjoyed having them on the show! They have so much passion and genuine love for games that it’s made me proud to be a supporter of their work! They deserve to see this project come to fruition, and I hope that all of you who read these notes and listen to the episode support them! Here’s the Kickstarter link again, so please donate what you can and spread the word everywhere! You can follow Lost in Cult on Twitter to keep up with updates, as well!
At the time of this writing, [lock-on] Volume 1 is at 91% of their funding goal with six days left, so they need all the support our community can give them! Please support their efforts, as this journal is the true evolution of gaming publications and will preserve and immortalize so many deserving elements and pieces of gaming history! Thank you to Jon and Jason for joining us, and thank you for listening! Don’t forget to support the Kickstarter!
