Hannibal Season One Retrospective: Guess Who’s Becoming Dinner
Greetings and welcome to our humble abode, fellow Renegades! We hope you’re hungry for a unique and tasty meal, as Mike and Tyler join guest host Billy Pollihan from the See You Next Summer podcast to take a look back at producer Bryan Fuller’s modern take on Hannibal, which premiered on NBC in 2013 and starred that delightfully delectable morsel of humanity, Mads Mikkelsen. Won’t you join us for dinner and a podcast? You know you want to!
If you plan on watching Hannibal in the future, be wary of SPOILERS in the podcast.
All three of our hosts are very enamored with the delicious writing on the show, from the darkly comedic undertone in the show to its heightened dramatic stakes. Fuller and his creative team pulled off the difficult task of making a series about a psychotic serial killer somewhat endearing and funny, while also maintaining the show’s identity as a crime drama and psychological thriller. Of course, the tasty acting on the part of Mikkelsen and co-star Hugh Dancy certainly brought the stunning scripts to life with aplomb.
Speaking of which, let’s talk about the series’ cast. Not only are the two main players undoubtedly perfect in their roles as Hannibal Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham, but we also see the likes of Laurence Fishburne as FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit commander Jack Crawford (along with Firefly’s Gina Torres as Crawford’s wife), Caroline Dhavernas as Dr. Alana Bloom, a former student of Lecter’s, Hetienne Park as Crime Scene Investigator Beverly Katz, andThe X-Files’ Gillian Anderson as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal’s psychiatrist. Truly an impressive cast, especially for a show just starting out its first season, and on primetime network TV, as well.
Before we close things out, I’m going to let our Captain, Mike, say a few words on season one:
Neither can we, Cap. Stay tuned for more Hannibal retrospectives here on Renegade Pop Culture, as well as other TV shows and films! Let us know how we’re doing in the comments below, and feel free to suggest any movies or series you’d like to see covered on the site, as well!
In this bittersweet episode of the Renegade Free For All, we bid farewell to one of the pillars of the podcast and website: Jacob, also known as the Streamin’ Demon.
