Invincible Creature Commandos - Renegade Animation #169
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss the first season of Invincible Fight Girl, while wrapping up their thoughts on the inaugural entry in the new DC Universe, Creature Commandos!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! We’re still catching up on unfinished business from 2024, but we are excited to share our thoughts on two late bloomers from that year. One of these shows happens to kick off a new era for the DC Universe, while the other could certainly use more support. Without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Invincible Fight Girl
I was quite impressed by this series from the very first episode! Creator Juston Gordon-Montgomery took the concept of an entire world of wrestlers and ran as far as they could with it. Featuring a stellar voice cast, incredible action sequences, and a story that seldom takes the easy way out, Invincible Fight Girl earns its reputation as one of the best series that premiered in 2024. Hopefully there is more to the story beyond the first season, especially where we’re left in the finale.
“It may sometimes lean on its anime inspirations a little too hard but its story of a young wannabe wrestler finding her own way to become the greatest is filled with fantastic action that results in a thrilling time.“ -The Animation Guru
Creature Commandos
The last time we talked about this series, only the first two episodes were released. Since then, the show has only gotten better, revealing tragic backstories for characters with whom I was not at all expecting to sympathize. There is an episode focusing on Doctor Phosphorus that I would put on the same pedestal as “Heart of Ice” from Batman: The Animated Series. Unlike the MCU, you shouldn’t feel obligated to watch Creature Commandos just for the sake of connecting the dots in some grand narrative. However, this does whet the appetite for how James Gunn plans to build out the DC Universe, and I’m excited for the future.
“While it might be James Gunn delivering us another rag tag team of misfits, their individual arcs and backstories help give us a different flavor of misfits. It’s also a delightfully unhinged and bloody good time at points with some great dramatic beats.“ -The Animated Guru
