Low-Key Loki Party - Capes #10
Tonight, on a very MISCHIEVOUS episode of Capes... we have a STACKED crew together to GUSH about Marvel's Loki, and Special Guest Host Cole Hrusovsky just KILLS everyone when Morbius comes up in conversation...
How’s it going fellow Renegades? THE DIRECTOR is back to bring you all probably our biggest episode in QUITE SOME TIME, as we brought back the Capes podcast to just GUSH about the latest Disney Plus Marvel show that’s got everyone wondering whether or not it’s weird to fall in love with yourself (I would mention the other thing, but we MAY have kids reading this, and that’s not comics code approved conversation). Yes, we’ve got THE STREAMIN’ DEMON, CAPTAIN KAYE, ORGANOIDZERO, KAY-RAH, myself, and special guests HAYLEE, DRAKE, PARKER, and YouTube’s own COLE HRUSOVSKY to talk Marvel’s Loki!
Now unlike the other times here on the shownotes, I’ve actually SEEN Loki, and therefore I feel myself qualified to give a brief review on the season as a whole, as I feel for a TV show (especially a mini-series such as how Marvel’s been doing), it’s important to judge the whole of a season rather than individual parts. This isn’t me throwing shade on any of the other sites that have been reviewing the series, but rather how I feel people prematurely judge a show’s quality on the internet COUGH, TWITTER, COUGH.
So with all that said.. what did I think of Loki?
Well… Loki might be one of the best things to come from the MCU in quite a long time, and it actually made me fully on board for whatever plans Marvel has for the the next decade.
If I had to say any gripes with the series right out of the gate, I guess a large part of it might be your openness to see Loki grow ALL OVER AGAIN. I’ll admit that when the series first started, I was fully on board with the fact that we basically got an time spanning crime story with the biggest heel the Marvel universe has ever had, but I’ll admit to feeling some apprehension when it came to seeing Loki’s story-arc play out once again after having gotten to know the character over the past decade. Not only that, but there is a small part of me that thinks the series does lends itself more to episodic storytelling rather than serialized storytelling, as the concept of Loki hopping across different timelines to solve a murder sounds perfect for changing it up every once in a while.
But that’s just me admittingly saying what I’d love to see rather than what we’ve got. And what we’ve got is an AMAZING series! Tom Hiddleston is at his absolute best in the MCU with this series, and Owen Wilson’s Mobius is a perfect addition that adds just an extra layer of charm. Not only that, but the direction by Kate Harron and the magnificent score by Natalie Holt is a major standout! PLEASE give the latter a Star Wars film!
However, the standouts for me - and I think this can be said for the other MCU Disney shows - are the writing team assembled! Michael Waldon from Rick and Morty absolutely brought it for this season, and as did Elissa Karasik, Eric Martin, Tom Kauffman, AND Bisha K. Ali (who will be the showrunner for the other show Ms. Marvel later on this year!) To handle all the concepts and themes that Loki does can cause everyone to crack under the pressure. But everyone of these people managed to pack in existential dread as well as a-hilarious-in-theory but beautiful-in-execution story of self love through the relationship that Loki and Sylvie (played by Sophia Di Martino) explore.
And I haven’t even touched on the Void that appears in episode 5, or how Gonzo the whole approach to worldbuilding is throughout the whole series! It’s just so good!
I’ll say this, as someone who was starting to wonder how Marvel could keep everyone’s attention for the next stage in its direction, Loki singlehandedly made me excited to be a Marvel fan all over again. If Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang Chi, AND The Eternals are as good as this? We’re gonna have another streak on our hands! AND if Hawkeye manages to be as charming as this show while being as hilarious as the Matt Fraction/David Aja series? Mannnnnnnnn… I’m just getting fed this year with Marvel! BRING ON THE MULTIVERSE!
