Machine Head Retrospective (Part 3): In Defense Of The Burning Red - RPC Jukebox #11
Previously on RPC Jukebox, Captain Kaye and Nick arrived at the second album in their series on the legendary rock band, Machine Head, and sung its praises. And now... the controversial episode!
How’s it going, fellow Renegades? It’s THE DIRECTOR back once again, as we continue our big chug down the Machine Head road as Captain Kaye and Nick are trucking ahead to their third studio album. And… it’s kind of an interesting one this time around. Usually, the big worry is that the second album is the one that a lot of people are more mixed on because… well, it’s an all too common issue: musicians spend a long time trying to build up their introductions, that when they’re given a second first impression, they either go through stuff they rejected for their debut, or they just jump into it trying to strike while the iron is hot.
Machine Head, however, still had some BANGERS on their last album. But when it came to the third album, it’s had a less than stellar reputation… and a large part of that might be due to the content involved. They came back cruder, ruder, and way more risque than before. Not only that, but nu-metal was just starting to rise as a sub-genre in the late 90’s (and let’s face it, Staind didn’t do people any favors. It was an album seemingly released at the wrong place at the wrong time.
So what happens when you have a band that’s not afraid to get dirty at their most controversial, in a time where what they were trying to do was becoming oversaturated by people trying to do what they did?
Well… you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out!
That’ll do it for this episode! Special thanks to Jacob for editing the audio! Keep a weather eye on the horizon, as a new podcast’ll rise like a phoenix very soon…
