How Naughty Dog Creates Empathy Through Gameplay
Hey all, The Director here… So I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s a few video games that just came out, such as The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and probably the only game that can rival Bugsnax for game of the year: Paper Mario: The Origami King.
That said, in addition to reading our fearless leader Neoplasmic’s amazing Last of Us 2 review, and listening to the spoilercast on The Last of Us Part II, I myself felt compelled to make a video on the ambitious Naughty Dog sequel. What can I say? The game has been invading my mind for the past few weeks, and I needed to get this out there for my own sanity.
In this video essay, I go into immense detail on the ways Naughty Dog - from Uncharted 3 all the way to The Last of Us Part II - elicits such strong emotions in the player through the gameplay. From feeling as anxious as young Nathan Drake running from Katherine Marlowe’s goons, to the confusion felt as you explore Joel’s house as a groggy Sarah.
NOTE: THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US PART II, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
