Ollie Gets Lost Playing Tekken - Renegade Animation #76
On this episode, Captain Kaye and The Animation Guru discuss the Netflix anime Tekken: Bloodline, as well as the live action/animated hybrid miniseries Lost Ollie.
What’s going on everyone? This week’s episode of Renegade Animation features two shows that could not be more different! One of them is an anime series based on the popular Tekken fighting game franchise called Tekken: Bloodline, while the other is a live action/animated hybrid miniseries based on the 2016 children’s book Ollie’s Odyssey by William Joyce called Lost Ollie. Check out what Cameron and I had to say about each series.
Tekken: Bloodline
“Tekken: Bloodline gets right what many other fighting game adaptations get wrong: the tournament IS the story! In this case, it's a damn good story, with some awesome fight sequences and a stylish blend of 2D and 3D animation. Yu Yu Hakusho's Dark Tournament Saga is still the best tournament arc in anime, but this one comes close. I want to see more fighting game adaptations step up to the plate!“ -Captain Kaye
“Through the punches, kicks, blocks, and wrestling suplexes, Tekken: Bloodlines finds a way to maneuver the trappings that K.O. most video game adaptations, and comes out on top as the king of the iron fist tournament.“ -The Animation Guru
Lost Ollie
“Lost Ollie is a powerhouse journey of the themes of love, grief, dealing with loss, and how you use said emotional baggage to shape your own person. Some may say this limited series is corny, but there is a lot of passion and love put into the character beats, and if you all love stuff like A Monster Calls, then this is an ideal limited series to check out. I can’t wait to see what Shannon Tindle, Peter Ramsey, and this talented crew of writers do next, and you should absolutely check this show out. Hopefully, they can also put this on a nice Blu-ray with some behind-the-scenes features of how they made the animation work as well as it does.“ -The Animation Guru
