Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Review - Renegade Animation #89
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru review the latest film from Dreamworks Animation, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, and it’s time for another mini episode! Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is now available to buy and rent digitally, but this podcast was recorded while the movie was still relatively fresh in theaters. 2022 was already a great year for Dreamworks Animation starting with The Bad Guys back in April, now tune in to hear how we thought director Joel Crawford and his team closed out the year.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
As I’ve expressed before, this was everything I could have wanted from a follow-up to the original Shrek spin-off from 2011, and then some! Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is still my #1 movie of the year, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish still delivers some of the most striking visuals, including a fantastic opening action sequence, and a chilling introduction to one of the main antagonists. For a film that’s still fairly kid friendly, it’s not afraid to tackle some mature themes of confronting one’s own mortality, and what it means to truly appreciate what you have in front of you. With a healthy balance of comedy, action, and genuine emotional beats, I’d call this a bonafide success!
“No matter how many lives you have, no matter how you slice it with this new iteration of the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a triumph not only for the studio or the franchise but animation in general. It might have some of the usual clunky DreamWorks tropes and ideals, but they are overshadowed by a fantastic script, the most endearing characters in the franchise, and some of the most stunning anime from 2022.” -The Animation Guru
