What’s up, everyone? Neoplasmic (Keona) here once again, and welcome to the show notes for this episode of Arcade. We wanted to catch everyone up on the announcements and revelations from Sony’s State of Play for June ‘22, which I’m sure will not be the last thing we see from them at Summer Games Fest, which is coming up this week. So consider this admittedly shorter video an appetizer for our SGF ‘22 coverage!
It seems there’s a consensus that this State of Play was the best of them so far! Nearly every trailer showcased a great game and some much-anticipated reveals! From the top, we had the reveal trailer for one of the worst-kept secrets in Capcom’s arsenal, the Resident Evil 4 remake, which looks to be doubling down on the survival horror aspects of the game and will release on March 23, 2023. From there, we had a more in-depth glimpse at Callisto Protocol, a really cool-looking sci-fi/space horror title from Striking Distance and the creator of Dead Space, which is getting its own remake soon. Stray also made an appearance in trailer form, and was confirmed to be available to high-tier PS Plus members at no extra cost when it releases in July.
Street Fighter 6 was also shown off in an impressive trailer that featured two more characters, Jamie (a brand new fighter) and of course, the strongest woman in the world, Chun Li. Gameplay looks tight and fast-paced, and I’m super intrigued by the new World Tour singleplayer mode and the Battle Hub, with its Game Center area and neat visual design. The splashes of color during the fight, hip hop theme, and ferocious impact between the characters during battle points to this being one of the best SF titles in years, and I am undoubtedly here for it! Can’t wait to play it myself in 2023!
Finally, Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida (lead producer on FFXVI) took to the screen and delivered the latest Final Fantasy XVI trailer, which still isn’t featuring a party system, but did a fantastic job of showing off improved visuals, epic music, awesome Eikons/summons, and a cutting edge battle system. With combat direction by Ryota Suzuki, who has worked on Capcom’s Devil May Cry 5 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, I’m sure that the action in this game will be top-notch, whether there are other characters featured in a party or not. Though I have to admit, playing a Final Fantasy game without fellow party members is going to feel weird. And the fact that we have to wait for one more year to play it is a bit disheartening. Still, the world design, graphics, voice acting, characters, music, and action are all pointing towards this being an excellent installment in the series, and I cannot wait to learn more about it and finally have a chance to play it in summer 2023!
Welcome to our Summer Games Fest 2023 wrap up special!
