Taking an Entergalactic Journey - Renegade Animation #80
In this mini-episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru review the television special (and visual component to Kid Cudi's 8th studio album), Entergalactic!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, here to bring you another mini-episode that focuses on the latest passion project from a multitalented artist whose work I haven’t really had the opportunity to talk about yet. Entergalactic is the name of both Kid Cudi’s 8th studio album, and a 90-minute television special co-created by Kenya Barris for Netflix. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of Kid Cudi’s music, Cameron and I still had a lot of positive thoughts regarding this project, so tune in to hear what he had to say.
Entergalactic
As I mentioned above, I’m at best a casual Kid Cudi fan, but I recognize that he’s one of those artists who is a genuinely great storyteller across all media. He’s not just a talented musician, he’s also a naturally charismatic actor. For a romantic comedy, it’s important for our main leads to have strong chemistry, which is exactly for him and co-lead Jessica Williams. The rest of the voice cast is terrific, the animation is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is a perfect complement to the narrative. If you were to put When Harry Met Sally and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in a blender, this would be the result.
“Entergalactic is, simply put, fantastic. It isn’t just a mood, it’s a vibe. It’s an experience where Scott Mescudi takes us through a combination of fantastic music and out-of-this-world visuals with a heartwarming romance between two souls wanting to find where they want to be with their lives. Its story might be a straightforward romance between our two leads, but the themes that it weaves throughout our leads' journey through love are eye-opening and vibrant with some of 2022’s most luscious visuals. It ain’t afraid to combine intimate relationships, sex, comedy, and 100% vibes via Cudi’s new soundtrack leads to one of the best examples of what kind of stories you can tell via animation. It’s honestly one of the best pieces of art to represent an adult story. More animation needs to be like this, and it’s a real shame that as of writing this review, the animation industry is about to dive into another possible dark age where creativity is frowned upon over what can be made for cheap and they can rake in more money. Entergalactic might be a tie-in with Mescudi’s new album, but it works as a stand-alone film and you should all check it out!“ -The Animation Guru
