Hey guys! The Director is back once again to bring you some show notes for the hottest show from Renegade Pop Culture since our other shows that are just as scalding (but not as spicy). This fire metaphor doesn’t work — but hey… I’m not Lamplighter. So sue me. That’s right ladies and germs: CAPES IS BACK!
First up on the docket, Mike and co. give us a rundown on the NYCC online event that took place over the weekend, which included the first look at Hulu’s MODOK, and Amazon’s next big superhero series, Invincible, based on the Robert Kirkman comic book!
Now I can only speak from my personal perspective, but the MODOK show has been something I’ve been curious about since Netflix was originally going to be making a bunch of animated shows that would culminate in an event series titled “The Offenders“ or something like that. The show that I was looking forward to in particular was Kevin Smith’s Howard the Duck, but sadly that has since been removed due to the shake-up at Marvel’s Television division where Jeph Loeb and Ike Perlmutter have finally been set free from all things related to that. In a sense… MODOK is the one of the last vestiges of old Marvel TV from the height of the 2010’s… and it’s a very interesting approach. I wasn’t expecting “stop motion,“ but I’ll say this: it stands out from the rest of the shows, and I’m kinda happy they’re taking risks!
Then there’s Invincible, which-while I am unfamiliar with Kirkman’s series-the trailer at least gives me some hope just with the cast alone! I mean, Steven Yeun AND J.K. Simmons?! Even if the animation feels a bit too stiff and clean for my taste, I’m willing to trust Amazon with this series, since their flagship show is doing gangbusters! (pun intended… god, did I REALLY say Gangbusters? What is this, the 1930’s?)
Speaking of, the main topic of this episode is Eric Kripke’s Amazon show The Boys! Based on Garth Ennis’ comic of the same name, it follows a group of horrible, traumatized, or psychotic (depending on your point of view) loners who are punching up to the heavens, looking to take down superheroes, who have become more corrupt and corporate, and have no value of human life unless it’s worth a dollar.
Now this is important to note, because they do get into spoilers, and it’s highly recommended that you hold off if you want to catch up or haven’t had a chance to. So if you don’t want to have it spoiled, you’ve been warned…
Not me though, because I haven’t caught up, but here I am, writing the show notes. Irony, thy name is RPC.
Now as for the show, I’ve only seen the first season and most of season 2, but - and while I’ll get into this more in a future podcast - I can say with full confidence that this is probably the best TV show that is airing right now! I remember being in high school at the height of Breaking Bad’s popularity, and just seeing the public reaction to this series gives me flashbacks to that! There are few shows that are able to tap into the cultural zeitgeist like this: Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Lost, Stranger Things, etc. But The Boys manages to balance that tightrope of edgy and heartfelt with its amazing writing and delightful cast of characters. The personal standouts for me are Jack Quaid and Erin Moriarty as Hughie and Starlight. Without these two… well… let’s just say they’re the show’s canary.
