I’m going to keep this really short and just congratulate Travis, Greg, and their artistic collaborator, Brett Weldele, on the mindblowing success of their relaunch on Kickstarter to fund issue two of this series! I cannot wait to see where Sara and Chris’ story goes and am super excited to see what these three amazing creators have in store for us! There are so many avenues this comic could explore, but the central mystery is why the Ultra Kids are in danger and why they gave up being superheroes. Was it due to some traumatic experience or event in their lives? Could they have been coerced into giving up that life? I have so many questions, and some of them are answered in this very episode!
Josh and I also want to thank Greg and Travis for sharing their expertise in writing for comics and becoming a creator in the field. And chatting about Junior Braves of the Apocalypse (which I finally had the chance to read) was so much fun! Greg and his co-creators Michael Tanner and Zach Lehner did a fantastic job with that book, and I urge everyone to read it! Oni Press published it and I’m sure you can find volumes one and two at your local comic shop, and volume three is on its way!
We’ll also have the opportunity in the near future to chat with Greg and Travis’ fellow Starlite creator, artist Brett Weldele! Weldele is the co-creator of The Surrogates, Top Shelf’s sci-fi/noir series which was made into a Bruce Willis action flick in 2009, and the Southland Tales graphic novel prequel series, based on Richard Kelly’s brain-scrambling follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut film, Donnie Darko. Suffice it to say, I have tons of questions about those two adaptations. The Surrogates comic is great stuff, by the way, and I encourage you all to give it a chance, even if you felt lukewarm about the movie. Trust me, it’s a lot better.
