2023 Winter Anime Season Impression: Volume 1 - Renegade Animation #93
It's the Winter anime season....again! In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru are joined by Haley and Teresa to discuss all the new anime titles filed under Comedy/Romance and Action/Adventure.
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, and I have good news and bad news. The good news is we’re talking about anime again! The bad news is, so far this season hasn’t exactly been the strongest start to the new year. Listen to the episode if you want our full thoughts on the 15 new anime titles filed under Comedy/Romance and Action/Adventure. However, if you’re in a hurry, keep reading and I will present the top 3 recommendations agreed upon by the panel.
Tomo-Chan is a Girl
Out of all the shows to receive and English dub, this one might be the best. That’s not the only reason it’s ranked this high, it’s merely the cherry on top of the sundae. The main appeal is our two romantic leads, who both clearly have feelings for the other, but are too dense to confess to one another. I can’t promise that everyone will vibe with its sense of humor, or that you won’t have some serious reservations with the very premise, but at no point was I ever bored by any of these scenarios. If you like your romcoms with an extra helping of chaos, there’s a character introduced in the second episode that would be happy to oblige.
Endo and Kobayashi Live: The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte
If you’re looking for something unique, here’s an anime that works on about 3 different levels. On the surface, you have a traditional high school slice of life romcom where two Broadcaster Club members Aoto Endo and Shihono Kobayashi bond over an otome game called A Magical Romance. This show operates not only as a clever send up of the various tropes of otome games, but the story within the game I found compelling enough on its own as a fantasy romance. Lest I spoil some of the twists and turns this anime takes, I’d rather let you experience them for yourself.
Trigun Stampede
Don’t worry, in case you haven’t seen the original Trigun anime, this is a top-down reboot of the manga. You don’t need to go into this with any prior knowledge, but for fans of the original, you may rejoice at the sound of Johnny Yong Bosch reprising his role as Vash in the English dub. Animation was provided by Orange, one of the few Japanese studios to perfect the art of seamlessly blending 2D and 3D animation. The story is great, the action is phenomenal, and this post-apocalyptic space western setting is fascinating. You don’t want to sleep on this one!
