Gettin' Funky with The Fungies - Tooned Up #18
Tonight, on a very FUNKY episode of Tooned Up, Captain Kaye and Cam The Animation Guru get totally insaney with A PLETHORA OF NEWS, including a look at Animaniacs and some holdovers from New York Comic Con, and they discuss the second half of The Fungies AND the discuss the FINAL SEASON of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts! What do they think! Do they think things? Let's find out!
Welcome fellow Renegades! Tis I, The Director, once again here to bring you the hottest show notes this side of the website! It’s another stacked show of Tooned Up as our boys Mike and Cam plow through a metric TON of news, and then they continue their thoughts on The Fungies and the series finale of Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts.
I’ll go ahead and let Mike carry us out on some of the notes for more of the notable things that were discussed this week, but there were a couple of things that stood out to me in the news portion of the show that I just NEEDED to talk about!
One of the biggest things that was talked about was the first look at the Hulu Animaniacs revival! I was not alive back in the golden age of the Spielberg Cartoons, but I had a mother that was very eager to get me hooked onto the entertainment of her day (I know, my age is showing, Jesus Christ)! By some miracle, we went to the nearby Walmart Supercenter, and she found a couple VHS tapes of Animaniacs in the bargin bin. That’s right kids, before they put DVD’s in the bargain bins, they used tapes (don’t even get me started on the lobster tubs they had). Anyway… right from the first minute, I fell in love with the show, and years later when the internet invaded my home, me and my Mom would look up clips on YouTube before the shadow of Viacom wiped away full episodes off the platform. Years later, I’ve only loved it more, and have come to appreciate the humor that Tom Rugger and co. came up with! I’ll admit, at the time of its announcement, the Hulu revival had me skeptical, but it’s such a fixture of my childhood that I was going to watch it regardless! And I’ll admit, seeing the Jurassic Park parody brought back a wave of memories that I had forgotten. The trailer that’s come afterwards is something magical too, and while it may be a bit too clean for my taste, it’s still a wonderful blast from the past, and I cannot wait for November!
Now the last thing I wanna talk about before I hand it off to Mike is a little Netflix show called Hilda! For those that have been around since the early days of the site, when we first started Tooned Up, you may remember that I recommended it to everyone (Mike seems to have forgotten it… sniff!), but regardless, hearing the news that Hilda is coming back in December is all sorts of exciting for me! I was introduced to it by my girlfriend Kay-Rah, who watched it on a whim while visiting her dad, and she told me I had to watch it! Before I knew it, we binged the whole season, and I was caught off-guard by the cozy feel the show gave me! It was actually one of the two shows that changed my mind on the modern cartoon styles of Steven Universe and Over the Garden Wall, probably because the whole show just exhumes the feeling of sitting around a campfire reading fairytales or going outside and exploring! The fact that it’s finally got a premiere date for season 2 has me beyond excited, and I cannot wait to see what the creators have in store for us!
So that’s it from me, but let’s see what Mike’s gotta say about our line-up today:
“I'll be discussing this in detail with Cameron on the next Tooned Up podcast, but people are seriously sleeping on The Fungies. Next to Close Enough and Infinity Train Book 3, it's honestly one of my favorite HBO Max originals, because it draws a lot of its influence from classic cartoons that I grew up on. Season 1B in particular does a better job of expanding the world, giving each of its supporting characters time to shine, and finds the right balance of teaching kids lessons without coming across as preachy. I could easily recommend this show to anyone.” - Mike on The Fungies!
“It feels weird to talk about a final season for a series that began and ended its entire run at the start of 2020, all jokes about how this year felt like forever aside. But yeah, that's what happened with Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. Cameron and I will talk about this on the next Tooned Up, but for now, I'm proud to call this my favorite animated series of the year. In 3 seasons, this series was able to tell a complete narrative about accepting differences, challenging adversity, and fighting for a better future. The animation from the ever impressive Studio Mir was stunning, and the writing, voice acting and soundtrack were top notch! If you're a fan of shows like Avatar the Last Airbender or the modern reboot of She-Ra, then I highly recommend checking this one out!“ - Mike on Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts!
Well, as we say on in the entertainment industry, that’s all folks! And Mike would love it if you could check out this GoFundMe for Kevin Smets! We’re going to be posting a link to the donation for the rest of the month, so if you can, even if it’s just a dollar, give Kevin some love right here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/smash-cancer-help-kevin-smets?utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=m_pd%20share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all
