Live, from Viltrum! It's the Renegade Animation Podcast! - Animation #18
Tonight, on a very bloody episode of Renegade Animation, Cam and Mike review the Amazon adaptation of Robert Kirkman's Invincible, Netflix's newest Lord & Miller joint The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and talk Infinity Train Book 4!
What’s up fellow renegades, it’s THE DIRECTOR! And I’m back again to bring you all the latest episode of the Renegade Animation — a first for the site as it’s a CO-EDIT with our kooky editor Kawaii Kyle AND Kay-Rah herself taking the duties behind the scenes for this assembly! But enough about the minutiae, you’re here for the news and for the reviews, and boy are there a lot of them! So let’s not waste any time, and get down to the meat and potatoes of the episode!
INVINCIBLE
The latest Superhero subversive series by Amazon Prime is a certified knockout across all our peers! Mike and Cam are head over heels for the series, particular praise being given to the writers involved, as well as the stellar leads Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons as the titular character and the main antagonist Omni-Man… even if the animation is less than stellar in most situations.
Personally speaking, I think this is one of the most stellar series in recent years. It manages to have the subversive bite of The Boys without having the cynicism and bleakness that comes with the Ennis adaptation. The flaws that do show their head from time to time, such as the stiff animation and minor continuity errors, don’t hold a candle to the beauty that comes from such a sincere and loving tribute to superheroism by pushing a hero though the worst they could deal with. And this isn’t to say anything of the all around stellar cast that is on display here, and if the first season is any indication… I think we may have an all timer here!
THE MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES
Another knockout from Lord and Miller — the fantastic duo that won the Academy Award for best animated film in 2019, and the award for best animated series to plant itself in my brain and never let go no matter what with Clone High! The Mitchells vs. The Machines earns high praise from Cam and Mike, calling attention to the breathtaking animation style from the crew, as well as the bouncy comedy and sincere tone that the film never lets up on!
I have to admit that I don’t find this as high on the list of Lord and Miller produced animated films like Spider-Verse or even Lego Movie… but the emotional beats that Mitchells hits are absolutely masterclass! Abbie Jacobson and Danny McBride’s chemistry is off the charts. The tone manages to walk the fine line between just being quirky and funny enough that it manages to be a perfect inverse of the more intense and dramatic moments. I highly recommend it with families, especially those of you who have a father!
INFINITY TRAIN
I…………… have not seen this one! But if we’re going by the Captain and the Guru, it’s also a great continuation of the series so far, with a prequel that adds a lot of speculative discussion amongst fans as well as being a lot lighter in tone compared to previous seasons (which is definitely welcome for Cameron!)
