Bee and Puppycat take Cars on the Road - Renegade Animation #78
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss some updates from this year's D23, Cars on the Road, and Bee and Puppycat: Lazy in Space.
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, here to bring you another excellent episode of Renegade Animation! This is probably one of the weirdest combinations of shows we’ve covered on the podcast, if only because we had more to say about one of them than we did the other. Tune into the episode to find out which one I’m referring to.
Quick D23 thoughts
Normally, we save discussions of trailers and news for the podcast itself, but I have some leftover thoughts regarding this year’s D23 that I wanted to get off my chest. Most of the discourse has been cluttered by those who felt “disappointed” by the lack of any major announcements from the Marvel and Lucasfilm presentations, despite the rumor mill unfairly inflating people’s expectations. However, what gets lost in these discussions is the fact that next year marks Disney’s 100th anniversary. That is a major milestone for any company, let alone the most recognizable name in the history of entertainment! Sure, they’ve had their ups and downs, and I don’t agree with all of their business practices (especially under the current regime). But at the end of the day, Disney has played the biggest role in getting me into animation as a storytelling medium, so I owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
Cars on the Road
There really isn’t too much to say about this series that we haven’t already said on the podcast, but I do genuinely believe this is the best thing to come from the Cars franchise. It’s only 9 episodes, and each one is a breezy 9-12 minute short involving Lightning McQueen and Meter traveling across the country and getting into some shenanigans. I recommend it, but it’s by no means a priority.
"Cars on the Road decides to double down on its absurd world as we follow our two leads going on a cross-country road trip that results in one of the most entertaining entries in Pixar's polarizing franchise." -The Animation Guru
Bee and Puppycat: Lazy in Space
Before I let Cameron summarize our collective thoughts, I’m just thankful that this show exists. We’ve complained ad nauseam about Netflix and the way they’ve been treating animation this year, but lest we forget that they were the ones who saved this show from oblivion back in 2020. If you’re a fan of Adventure Time, but with a extra dose of weird, psychedelic animation, then definitely give Bee and Puppycat a watch!
“Bee and Puppycat is an out-of-this-world ethereal journey in animation. It has its moments where it can be a touch clunky and it’s pretty obvious that there is either a new season planned or a batch of episodes that have yet to be released due to its ending, but if you are looking for another “new” show to sink your teeth into with the symbolism and relaxing atmosphere, then you will definitely love this show. There is some confusion about if this new show is actually just season 2, but it’s mostly an Evil Dead 2 or a Desperado situation. It's partly a reboot of the first series of shorts and a sequel series, but all told as if it was made for a first-time audience. Bee and Puppycat is great, and you all should definitely give it a watch if you are looking for new non-returning shows to put on your Netflix playlist.” -The Animation Guru
