Kizazi Moto: Generation Unicorn - Renegade Animation #114
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, and Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, while sharing first impressions of My Adventures With Superman!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, and we have some very cool projects to discuss in this episode! Cameron and I will share our impressions of the first three episodes of My Adventures With Superman, while our main topics include the latest miniseries from Genndy Tartakovsky, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, and Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, a Disney+ anthology series from various African creators. Tune into the episode to hear our full discussion!
My Adventures With Superman
We will certainly have more to say about this series once the first season wraps, but for now, I’m just happy that this exists! The reason this and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal are airing on Adult Swim is because they have expanded their demographic to include young adults. Whether or not you feel that “dilutes” the brand is a topic for another day. I love this voice cast, Jack Quaid excels at playing both the adorkable Clark Kent and his superhero counterpart. He shares great chemistry with Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen. We have no idea where the story goes from here, but that’s what makes watching this so exciting!
“The newest iteration of Superman brings whimsy, charm, and optimism to the world of the DC hero with the help of clever writing and Studio Mir's fantastic animation!“ -The Animation Guru
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal
There’s a reason why Genndy Tartakovsky has become so revered in the animation industry, it’s because it fully understands what the medium is capable of. When describing one of his influences, particularly the funeral scene in Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, he stated: “There's a dirty word in animation of being 'too cartoony'. They say that you can't feel emotion if it looks too goofy. And that's bullshit. And so that's what I really wanted to do is have this very cartoony thing, but the emotions are real. And the drama really is a soap opera almost, it's so heightened.” This quote hits the nail on the head, which is why I adored Unicorn: Warriors Eternal from start to finish. It has a phenomenal premise, great character designs, and an engaging narrative for our central protagonists. I perhaps could have done without the love triangle elements, but it does result in some admittedly fun character beats towards the second half of the series. Give this one a watch, especially if you’re a fan of steampunk, classic Fleischer Studios cartoons and Astro Boy.
“A journey decades in the making results in a fantastic combination of action, fantasy, and steampunk with a compelling trio of characters and some of the best animation of the year.“ -The Animation Guru
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire
Between this and Star Wars: Visions, I love this idea of Disney+ giving a platform to animation from around the world. In this case, executive producer Peter Ramsay presents a showcase of 10 shorts from various African animation studios, including Triggerfish, Blink Industries, Lucan Studios, Giraffics, Saturday Animation Studios, and Portfolio Animation Studio inc. If you’re a fan of Afrofuturism, then I would highly recommend checking this out.
“A showcase of the incredible talent from Africa's animation scene brings a creative take on sci-fi with 10 wonderful shorts.” -The Animation Guru
