The Prince Gets Spirited Away to Centaurworld - Renegade Animation #31
Tonight, on a very ANGRY episode of Renegade Animation: Cam and Mike RAGE over the third worst thing to happen in the UK in HBO Max's The Prince, as well as discuss Netflix's Centaurworld, and Mike FINALLY talks Spirited Away!
What’s up, fellow Renegades? I’m THE DIRECTOR and uh… MAN do we have a very aggressive episode for y’all today. Seriously, I dunno how long it’s been since we’ve had Mike this angry over an animated series, probably since he talked about Hoops? But even then… Jesus. It’s a rough one today folks.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! There’s some nice words to say about Netflix’s Centaurworld, which looks to be a charming affair! AND, Captain Kaye himself gets to discuss revisiting Spirited Away.
We got a good show for you guys, and with that… let’s take it over to our captain himself:
THE PRINCE (2021 - I HOPE NO OTHER YEAR)
“The Prince is my new brown standard for adult animation. This is genuinely one of the worst shows I've seen in a very long time, and big shock, and just when I thought Hoops was the lowest Bento Box Entertainment could go. Sure, there may be a few chuckles sprinkled throughout, and it's a great ensemble cast, but they're all wasted on a fundamentally toxic premise from series creator Gary Janetti, who's only claim to fame is his fucking "satirical" instagram page for Prince George! Literally the only reason I watched this piece of garbage was for review purposes.” - Captain Kaye
CENTAURWORLD (2021 - Current)
“There is nothing quite like Centaurworld, an animated musical comedy series now streaming on Netflix. This wonderfully weird series was created by Megan Nicole Dong, and is drenched in a wide array of influences, from Broadway musicals to Saturday morning cartoons, from shows like Adventure Time to Avatar the Last Airbender. The songs range from whimsically over the top to tear-jerking, sometimes even in the same episode. I don't really know what else to say without giving away spoilers, you just have to experience it for yourselves.” - Captain Kaye
SPIRITED AWAY (2001)
“While this might be my personal favorite Ghibli film, it's still one that makes me feel very nostalgic. For many people around my age, this might have been their first exposure to Miyazaki's films in the west, let alone anime in general, and it would leave a lasting impression. Revisiting this as an adult, I was just taken aback by the craft of it all. It's a simple story, but its simplicity leaves plenty of room for the characters to shine. Speaking of characters, the English voice cast is perfect. Daveigh Chase is absolutely delightful as the main protagonist Chihiro Ogino, as is Jason Marsden as Haku, David Ogden Stiers as Kamaji, Susan Egan as Lin, and the late great Susan Pleshette as Yubaba/Zeniba. There's hardly anything I'd consider a flaw in this film, it's practically perfect from start to finish. Everything from the animation (especially the food porn), to Joe Hisaishi's iconic score makes this a masterpiece worth celebrating.” - Captain Kaye
